All About Silkworms!

Apr 14th 2024

If you have pet reptiles, you’re probably familiar with silkworms. Silkworms are a fan favorite for many reasons including their nutritional value, how easy they are to keep and how appetizing they seem to be to most pets!

Feeding your pets silkworms is one of the best things you can do for their health and development. Silkworms are extremely high in calcium and many other vitamins and minerals. They have a good amount of protein and a small fat percentage. Because of their low fat content, these worms are a good option for an overweight pet that may need to lose a few grams. They are also great for pets who may be sensitive to bugs with harder exoskeletons. Silkworms are soft bodied and are very easy to eat and digest. As long as you are feeding your pets the appropriate size worm, they are unlikely to cause impaction. Another good thing about silkworms is that their nutritional value is very predictable. Silkworms are different from other feeders in the sense that they only eat one kind of food. Silkworms only eat mulberry leaves or a special silkworm chow made out of mulberry leaves. This means that their nutrition doesn’t change based on what they are eating.

Silkworms are also an amazing way to add some variety to your pet’s diet and switch things up for them. They also seem to be extremely delicious to most animals. They tend to trigger a very strong feeding response and can get even the most picky eaters to snack on them. Most pets are quick to snatch up silkworms and chow down on them!

Another huge plus when using silkworms as feeders is how easy they are to keep! Silkworms don’t require any water and are typically fine with whatever food comes with them when you get them. They don’t make any noise and they also don’t really move around much at all. They have little to no odor and are relatively clean compared to some other feeders. They also tend to be much hardier than other feeders. They have minimal die off and will live substantially longer than feeders such as crickets.

A few negative things about silkworms are their cost as well as their availability. Silkworms are one of the more involved feeders to breed, making them one of the less readily available feeders. Silkworms tend to be out of stock on a lot of feeder sites and their availability can be considered more seasonal. The tedious breeding process and amount of time it takes to cultivate these feeders is the reason that they are higher in price compared to other bugs.

Although silkworms can be more expensive and harder to come by than other bugs, they are totally worth it and definitely something to consider when looking for feeders for your pets! We do our best to keep our website stocked with silkworms whenever it is possible and are always looking for new ways to bring you quality feeders at fair prices!
