Why We Think Dubia Roaches are the Best Feeders

Apr 14th 2024

There are many reasons why we think that Dubia roaches are the absolute best feeder insects for our pet reptiles. From the nutrients that they provide to the ease of caring for these bugs, we love pretty much everything about roaches and we truly believe that these are the best staple for really any pet reptile.

Our favorite part about dubia roaches is how they are basically the most nutritious feeders that are available to us. Dubia roaches are all inclusive and are great to use regularly. As with everything, a variety is amazing and supplementing roaches with other feeders is important. Dubia roaches have so many of the great things that animals need and not as much of the less desirable traits that other feeders have. Dubia roaches are high in protein, calcium and minerals but are low in fat. They also contain a lot of “meat” in relation to their size. Animals will need to eat many fewer dubia roaches than other feeders. Dubia roaches contain around 21% protein compared to about 7% fat. This is a great ratio for raising healthy reptiles. Other feeders like superworms, wax worms and BSFL are very high in fat and can contain less protein

Dubia roaches also tend to be a favorite for many reptiles. The roaches move quickly but not too quickly for the animal to catch. They allow for a good hunt but they don’t make it too difficult. They do a great job at triggering a hunger response from most animals and are a great option for most picky eaters.

On top of the many nutritional benefits of dubia roaches, they are also one of the easiest feeders to care for. They can be fed pretty much any fresh fruits and veggies and can be happily kept at room temperature (but happier kept a bit warmer.) Dubia roaches breed easily if kept at warmer temperatures and the females can have around 35 babies at a time! Another thing that we love about dubia roaches is that they are unable to climb slippery surfaces such as glass or slick plastic. Unlike other roach species, these roaches cannot climb up walls that are not textured. This makes it easier to keep them contained and some people don’t even use a lid on their dubia enclosures. They also cannot fly. The males do have wings but the most they can do is flutter to a lower point in their enclosure. Females and nymphs do not have wings at all. They also don’t smell, bite or make noise and those are all wins in our book!

We honestly can’t think of many cons for using dubia roaches as feeders. They’re healthy, clean and readily available in most areas. Dubia roaches are the first bug we reach for when going to feed our pets. If you haven’t tried dubia roaches, we highly recommend giving them a shot!
